Grooming

The standard schnauzer has a double coat that requires regular grooming and maintenance.  Their harsh wiry outer coat protects them from water and dirt and they also have a soft undercoat.

To maintain the coat, standard schnauzers have to be hand stripped. The undercoat requires regular carding. Their faces and legs should be brushed out regularly to keep the hair from matting. Standard schnauzers don't shed much when their coat is properly maintained. They rarely have to be bathed.

Another option is clipping the standard schnauzer. However, they will lose their hard outer coat and will become lighter in color.

Standard schnauzers also need regular maintenance- nail cutting, tooth brushing, and ear cleaning.
